SINNER GET READY is a challenging listen, and I say that as someone who listens to some pretty inaccessible stuff. If you’re familiar with the movie First Reformed, it’s essentially the musical equivalent of that. It’s a slow burning polemic against the abuses of religion (while being an undeniably religious work of art) that’s just as willing to skewer itself as anyone else. It’s disturbing and dissonant despite being mostly sparse bells and banjos and crooning vocals. It can bore you and scare you at the same time. Atonal piano chords form something of a musical theme throughout the album, the tolling of a clock counting down towards an impending judgement for humanity’s hubris, whether Divine or Natural. While each track has it’s moments of gloomy standout, it’s midpoint “REPENT NOW CONFESS NOW” that offers the most immediate entry point with layered vocals that form a haunting build that encapsulates the journey of the entire album in miniature. If you’re looking for an easy listen, this absolutely isn’t it. But if you want something that will challenge you both musically and philosophically, this certainly will, no matter where you are coming from.
