genres: progressive metalcore
Trivium has never quite connected for me – before this, that is. I’ve appreciated their proggier moments, and their guitar work is of course wonderful, but at least their recent albums have had just a little too much “post-grunge” or radio-ready alt-metal flavor for me personally. I checked out opening single “In The Court Of The Dragon” on a whim when it came out, and it was instantly compelling, somehow melding punk energy and prog metal into a heavy yet accessible package, and that proves to carry through the rest of the album. I’m no expert on Trivium, but I’d venture to say it’s their heaviest offering yet, and it gets there in a very adventurous way. There’s everything from straightforward anthemic aggression (“No Way Back Just Through”) to pure virtuosity and crazy songwriting (“A Crisis Of Revelation”) to a near power metal epic (“The Shadow Of The Abattoir”). Along the way, the band touches on nearly every era of heavy metal from classic prog rock to heavy metal to thrash to melodic death metal to modern metalcore, yet weaves it into something entirely their own. There are countless riffs on this album that are both catchy and entirely unique. Other places will for sure cover this album in more detail, but it’s definitely worth a listen whether or not you have been a fan of Trivium in the past.
