genres: black metal + experimental electronic
Disclaimer: this album is not really for me. Everything that makes traditional black metal hard for me to get into – rough production and vocals, repetitive music – is present here. BUT. It’s worth talking about for a couple reasons. First, those elements of black metal are intentionally deployed, and tastefully at that. Most bands trying to recapture that rawness of the genre’s early days of no-budget/bootleg recording today stumble and either sound overly muddled or like they’re trying too hard. Electromancy does neither. The rawness is present, but it translates it to today’s technology quite effectively. Second, what this band is physically doing is really awesome. Everything is programmed and actually played by robots (which contributes to the decision towards repetition, I think)out of necessity. Even by choice it would be a really cool experimental idea, but given the story behind the project, it’s even more triumphant. This probably isn’t the gateway album into black metal for non-fans, but if you’re already into the genre (or any type of experimental music) it is well worth a listen.
